This is the helmet as I received it. The customer provided me with a reference picture of something he liked, basically consisting of old school flames and a checkerd flag theme.
After removing any parts that could be removed, I masked off the rest of the helmet and wet-sanded the surface with 800 grit ...
... then masked off the pattern for the checkered flag area. For this, I layed down one piece of tape from the front of the helmet to the back as a centre guide, and used a small ruler to measure the increments for the pattern.
After masking off the rest of the helmet, I sprayed the black areas for the checkered flag ...
I used a computer cut paint mask, and painted the customer's name on the front of the helmet.
After masking off the name and the checkered flag pattern I sprayed the helmet metallic silver.
Using 1/8'' blue fineline tape and green painters tape, I layed out the flames and masked off the insides...
then lightly airbrushed in a number "21" using Cobalt Blue Kandy, and a drop shadow on the lower edges of the flames using an over-reduced black.
Next I sprayed the visible silver with Oriental Blue Kandy, and peeled off all the masking.
Using my trusty sword-striper, I pinstriped around all the flames ...
and after the addition of a couple small logos and a few minor touch-ups, it's ready for clear coat.
